Skinny models, not a good role model for our daughters.

I was reading one of my beauty magazines I subscribe to and it really bothered me that every page I turned was full of skinny, anorexic looking models. They look unhealthy, and unhappy. It upset me. I know it's out there. I know my own daughter struggled with her weight through her teen years, and must have hated every magazine I brought into the house. She is a beautiful young woman today, a size 10, not a size 0 as the models are. When will this stop? Our young girls of today have a hard time following people like Madonna, Britney Spears and the likes, as well as how their bodies should look. I am proud to say that in our business, where we film make up tutorials, we have women from 17 to 62, all sizes, skin issues, for the reason we know everyone has a beauty.
Check out YouTube and pass it on to all your girl friends. Me? I am a size 10 and proud of it.

I agree with you Barbara, that everyone has a beauty and we shouldn't look at someone and try to be like them...

I think that it's up to everyone to choose what is his perfect size. If you want to be skinny - it's your choice, if you don't - it's your choice as well. I agree that media promotes "skinny model" too much, so we should learn not to listen to media and have our own idea of our perfect size.

I absolutely agree that it is our choice to be whatever size we want. I feel the fashion industry in general puts so much on the models to be extra skinny, where in some cases you can see their ribs sticking out, and these are the girls our youth of today see in the media and feel that's the way they should look too. Unfortunately, they pick up magazines full of these pics, so even if they don't listen to the media, they are visually seeing these extra skinny women.

It's good that nowadays you can see some not very skinny girls in our magazines. For example, look at Kim Kardashian, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce. And these women are very popular. So I think that all this skinny models will soon be not interesting to everybody. The standard of beauty is changing...

Wow! I guess that is an important step!

We are making progress regarding the portrayal of full figure women. The Dove Girls are one example. They showcase real women with real curves. England discourages women that are anorexic from entering their beauty pagents. Actresses like Rosey O'Donnell, Oprah Winfrey, and Queen Latifa are excellent role models for young women that are full figured. Today, when you go in a store, you find plus sizes in the main area rather than hidden in the back of the store. Women are starting to accept their bodies in all shapes and sizes.

I think there is another side to this. Yes, the media influence our children--boys as much as girls. I am positive a neighbor's boy I know began driving like a maniac because of the movie "The Fast and the Furious."
Without commenting on any one mother anywhere, maybe all mothers should be exerting as much influence on their children as the media--I know, easier said than done--or at least spending more time with them. We can't blame the media for everything, though I agree they are a problem.
