A wonderful little book crossed my desk recently, and I wished it were around during the days I read bedtime stories to my two daughters (I nearly had an aneurysm once reading The Princess and the Pea to my older daughter; I did not repeat the mistake with the younger one).
But this book, Princess Bubble, wrtten by Susan Johnston and Kimberly Webb and illustrated by Ma… Continue

Once upon a time there were two Delta flight attendants who were single and unapologetic. Together, the women wrote a book that turned the traditional princess narrative on its head. The end.
Actually, Susan Johnston and Kimberly Webb's story of Princess Bubble is the opposite of "the end" theory, in which every princess gets her man a… Continue

Single on New Years?
I think New Year’s Eve is overrated. I always have. And I do not believe it is because I am 42 and single. It is like when you hear a movie is the greatest movie ever made and your expectations are so high that when you see the movie you think, “Well, it was alright.” Same with New Year’s Eve. If you go into to New Years not expecting much you will probably have a great night.
My plans are to hang out with my almost 3 and 7 years old nephews. You are probably thinking that… Continue

The Good and the Bad of Children’s Books
It wasn’t that long ago that various media (frommagazines toblogs)spoke up in disbelief over My Beautiful Mommy, a children’s book by Michael Salzhauer. Anything I have to say about the book won’t be anything new, but needless to say, it’s problematic given its glamourisation of plastic surgery.
Some good news, though? Well, it seems it’s been available for some time now, but I got an email from Susan Johnston this week about her book,Princess Bubble. F… Continue

Princess Bubble (minus Prince Charming)
Courtesy of PrincessBubble.com
When "Princess Bubble" crossed my desk I wasn't sure what to think of it. The little book follows the adventures of Princess B as she journeys, prince-less, to acceptance that her life is great as it is and that she doesn't need a prince to be happy.
This isn't a man-hating book at all, just a kid-friendly rewrite of the usual fairytale. Princess Bubble travels, makes friends, loves her family, and is content with where sh… Continue

Auburn Alumna writes fairy tale book with message
By Sarah Loveless
Once upon a time, Auburn alumna Susan Johnston decided it was time to show women of all ages that they could have just as much joy without a "prince charming" as they would with one. So, she wrote a book, Princess Bubble.
Johnston graduated in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in public relations, and is a forth generation Auburn graduate.
Her Auburn experience with public relations equipped her with the skills needed to do most… Continue

World's Oldest Bridesmaid Dies
Edith Gulliford passed away at 106 with her family at her bedside several days after a fall at her home.
In March this year she found herself in the Guinness Book of Records for being the oldest bridesmaid in the world when she was an attendant at her great-granddaughter's wedding.
I have been in 17 weddings, but this lady takes the cake, the garter, the satin shoes....
I wonder if anyone told her, "I picked a dress you can wear again?"

The three most common disorders in girls today are low self-esteem, depression, and eating disorders. In 2003, breast implants tripled from 3,872 to 11,326 in girls under age 18. Girls ages 12 to 19 spent over $8 million on cosmetics in 2005 (Source: Report of the APA Task Force on the Sexualization of Girls,2007).
So what is a parent to do about traditional fairly tales like Cinderella that teach all girls must marry and live happily ever after -- when we all know there are many other fulfilli… Continue

The feminist, eco-mom’s lament: What to do about princesses!
For the first two years of my daughter’s life, I shielded her from fairy tales and Disney movies about happily ever after and surrounded her with books about animals and nature. Then, she met a little girl that would become her best friend, who also introduced her to the world of Disney Princ… Continue

A friend recently suggested that I read this new book called Princess Bubble.http://www.princessbubble.com
I have a daughter and as I am learning here about the sex-ratio's and the fact that there are 51% more single women than married women for the first time in U.S. History, I want to make sure I give my daughter a different set of expectations.
Being divorced myself, I know that dating is difficult, yet I never imagined that it would be so for my daughter. As a parent I think it is importan… Continue
I have a friend who has been married forever. I was/am so happy for her that she found her prince and has had 3 beautiful girls. But, I have to admit that it is so annoying that she can sometimes not see I also enjoy my life. She must think I am secretly miserable and putting on a happy face. Some of her comments lead me to believe this. I have told her on two occasions about male friends of mine that I know are gay -- but are not out of the closet. BOTH times she said, "Well, they could make gr… Continue

I recently watched Becoming Jane with a friend and her 14 year old daughter.
Here is a little plot outlineif you have not seen the movie:
The year is 1795 and young Jane Austen is a feisty 20-year-old and emerging writer who already sees a world beyond class and commerce, beyond pride and prejudice, and dreams of doing what was then nearly unthinkable - marrying for love. Naturally, her parents are searching for a wealthy, well-appointed husband to assure their daughter's future social standin… Continue
